I know this place is normally reserved for electronics, but this is an electric guitar...so...

Anyways, I have to sell my beautiful Gretsch G5120 with a high gloss sunburst finish. This thing is like new in every way. Bone stock, no issues. I have only owned it a couple of months, but I need to let it go. I got a fantastic price on it from a guy who never played it so I am passing on that same price. These sell for $750 new. I will let it go for $450 plus actual shipping. I know chances of selling this here are not as good as some other foums, but I want my RS friends to have a shot at this beauty.

EDIT - TOO LATE!! SOLD:thumbsup:

Background! My main Folder is an Asus G74 whose keyboard got wrecked by just using a damp cleaning cloth on it (something I do ALL the time on tons of other notebooks and keyboards). It originally came with two 750GB 7200RPM drives, and when I put it in service as a 24/7 Folder in January, I used one of them as the boot drive.

It seemingly failed within a couple of months. I couldn't really even use Seagate's drive tools on it, as it just crashed the system.

I swapped in the second drive, and got it back up and running.

Now after Windows Updates on Tuesday, the updates seemed to take too long...which is what started happening when the first drive failed.

So I decided to finally buy a copy of Spinright 6 (www.grc.com) and see if I could figure out what was going on.

Okay, now we're at the actual Spinright part...

So it's a $90 program that's supposed to create a boot disk and do a low level scan of your drive. It's supposed to be able to do it on a floppy, a CD/DVD/Blu Ray, or any random drive (i.e. USB flash stick).

Of course normally all my systems have Blu Ray, but I pulled the Blu Ray drive from this notebook since...it's just sitting there 24/7, and doesn't really need a drive-figured I'd rather save the drive for something else. So I had to do USB...

The first stick I tried, a 32GB Sony that works fine for everything, Spinright claimed to be creating the boot disk, but it wouldn't actually boot.

I switched to a Sandisk 8GB weird storage thingee I have, and it WOULD boot off that.

So then this morning I try it on my main Folder (putting it out of commission for the time being, sorry!) After a LOT of trial and error I seem to have it running, but I had to switch the drive to IDE mode, and for some reason (unlike the computer I tested it on) it took a long time to detect the drive, and then took a long time to just scroll through the list of drive.

I'm very curious about whether this will find anything or not, but even shutting down Windows took way too long (at least way too long for a Sandy Bridge quad core with a 7200RPM drive!) From listening to Gibson's Security Now, it sounds like even running this may cause the drive to fix problems internally without Spinright being able to know about them...if they're not too bad.

If it's NOT the drive, then I'm not sure what's wrong...because it took 2x the time as on my slower Penryn based system, and I think actually longer even than my c50 system with a 5400RPM drive.

It has occurred to me that these drives are probably from the same batch, and subjected to the same conditions in the system when it shipped, but also they're in a notebook running at 100% 24/7, and while the cooling for the CPU and GPU seem excellent, perhaps the hard drives get too hot in that situation. If this drive does fail, I might eventually wind up with a cheap/small Intel SSD for it, see if that can survive better (not actually sure that it can...)

Anyway, about Spinright...supposedly it's the best program there is for this, but I'm unimpressed by what a pain it is getting it running on pretty bog standard hardware. Steve Gibson has said his 6.1 update will change a bunch of stuff so it's not dependent on the BIOS anymore-as I guess those are getting really buggy. So quite possibly with 6.1 this will all get fixed (and I think it'll be aware of hybrid drives like Seagate's Momentus XT, have extra tests for them, although this still works on those).

For the time being though, I'm sad to say I'mnot sure this tool is easy enough to use for non-power users.

Going to post again when it tells me what it's found!

Some hopefully interesting info. re running new Ver 7 FAH client on new XPS L702x 17" laptop, i7 2760QM. New client is actually rather slick IMO. Unfortunately the specific version of my GPU 555M is not yet supported in V7. Known problem.

V7 kicked XPS fan into high gear so I checked temps. Core temps were too high, up to 90C - 70, 77, 85-90, 87-90. Client running as SMP 8 apparently doesn't spread processing evenly over all cores. To lower temps, after much searching finally found how to throttle down processors using Power Mangement, Max Processor State. Strange results at least to me. A 1% reduction in the Max Processor State had a remarkable impact.

Max
Processor
State .Watts .Core0 ...Core1 ...Core2 ...Core3 ...CPU MHz ..Est. PPD ...TPF
100% ..42.3 ..86-90, ..83-87, ..77-81, ..70-70 ..2395-2494 ..15,159 ..2:45
99 ......32.7 .....73 .......71 .......65 .........62 ........2195 .....13,284 ..3:04
98 ......28 ........62 .......61 .......57 .........55 ........1995 .....13,717 ..3:35
multiple tests, varying results as shown on next line for same 98%:
98 ......28 ........73 .......71 .......65 .........62 ........1995 .....11,953 ..3:20 ..varied Estimated PPD may be due to different projects
97-90% no change in temps etc.
89 .....26.6 ......66 .......63 .......60 .........58 .........1896
88-86% no change in temps etc.
85 .....24.7 ......62 .......61 .......55 .........54 .........1796

Now running @98% with core temps 57-62C. Probably could push back to 99% with temps 62-73C. Comments??

FYI, If you change the Max Proc State (lower), make sure the MIN Proc State is NOT higher than the MAX.

Happy folding!

I was expecting there'd be threads about this 'cause I'm always last to know. Sounds like you guys STILL know 'cause I read about it in another thread.

Anyway version 7 is for Windows-not sure what else it supports, but it apparently replaces the single CPU version, the SMP version, and GPU version.

http://folding.stanford.edu/English/WinGuide

Sounds like it installs a graphical configuration thing which manages whatever combination of clients (now "slots") you'll be running on a given PC. It also talks about being able to manage OTHER PCs from one PC over a network, but I'm taking this one step at a time!

I'll try to transition my PCs over to this, which will probably take a couple of days, and will mean I'll be down a bit as I'll have to use the -oneunit flag and might not be here when my current work units finish. I'll post if I have any issues or however this works out!

Well after much procrastination and waiting for "bigger and better" I finally ordered a new laptop. I know, I know there were a million other options  but I decided to buy another Dell laptop. I've had good luck with Dell's service for my current laptop.

Ordered an XPS 17 from the Outlet for $1,080, app. $200-300 less than custom configuation.
- i7-2670 QM Processor
- Nvidia 555M 3GB
- 6 GB RAM (would have preferred 8, oh well)
- 17.2" FHD WLED AG (1920 x 1080)
- 750 GB/7200RPM
- 8X DVD RW
- 9 cell battery
- 1 year warranty (defeated my temptation to buy 3 yr at exorbitant price:D)
- Win 7

Ok, now everyone can tell me about better lapies :o:o:laugh1:

Almost forgot, this one will actually go to my wife to replace dying used Vostro that I bought from Leganfuh (The Commander) a couple of years ago.

Well my Corsair HX1000 bit the dust today. Not sure if it was already dying or I contributed to the problem. Long story made short, my UPS was acting up and displayed a msg that implied the battery needed to be replaced. Installed a new battery today and when I plugged my "beast" in I kept getting an error message indicating an overload. So I thought the new battery was bad. Put the old battery back in and when I plugged the "beast" in it sparked. Not good! Sooooo, thinking the problem was with the UPS, I plugged the PC directly into the wall outlet. BAD IDEA! Another spark and a pop noise from the PSU :( The PC was powered down but the switch on the PSU was on when I plugged it in. Maybe that caused the short????

I'm praying that only the PSU is dead and I didn't kill the whole darn system.

As I don't want to wait for the RMA process, I ordered a new Corsair 1200 that will hopefully be hear by Wednesday. I did get an RMA # from Corsair, so I may end up with 2 PSU.
